You may have heard that “It takes a village to raise a child.” This saying reminds us that we all have to work together if we want happy kids, a healthy planet and a safe, strong community. That’s also the spirit behind CSR.
CSR stands for corporate social responsibility—the idea that companies have a responsibility to do more than just make money. They also have to look after the environment, and help make their communities safer and stronger. This makes sense. Think about it. How can a company be considered successful if it makes a good profit but produces a lot of greenhouse gases, dumps poisonous chemicals into the water system, or stores toxic garbage in cans that leak?
But companies aren’t the only ones who have an obligation to be socially responsible. We each have a responsibility to support ourselves to the best of our ability, take care of the environment, and give something back to our community, or “village.”
For our own sense of accomplishment and to make sure we can afford at least basic necessities of life, we must do the best we can to support ourselves and the people who depend on us. To make sure our planet continues to be able to supply the food, clean water, fresh air, and the variety of plants, animals and minerals we need to survive, we have to take care of it.
If you want to live and raise your kids in a safe and healthy community don’t leave it to others to make it happen. Get involved. It only takes one person who cares to make a difference. Social responsibility is the way each of us, working on our own and together, can help make the world a better place for our kids, their kids, and generations to come.
